This week, we are rolling out our 2017-2018 orchestra fundraiser. This fundraiser provides crucial support to our orchestra program and supplements our limited school budget of $100. Your generous support helps us purchase new music for our concerts ($50-75 per piece), new strings and bow re-hairs for our school instruments, scholarships for students, guest artist coaching, and other program needs throughout the year. Please consider giving what you can - every bit helps!
Click HERE for information on how to order uniform items for orchestra. Please email Ms. Little if you need any support obtaining these items for your student.
*all field trips are optional - please email Ms. Little if you need any financial support due to hardship

This week, we will be rolling out our Google Classroom platform for orchestra. On Wednesday and Thursday, I will go through step-by-step instructions on how to join our classroom and login to their personal accounts. We will be utilizing Google Classroom for a bulk of the playing tests/quizzes throughout the year. Please read through the attached documents with your child. Students will receive hard copies of these papers in class this week. You can check in on your child's progress in Google Classroom by logging in with their username and password. You can access their playing test video submissions, as well as private feedback that I leave for them.
Extra Practice/Help Sessions
Everyday, starting at 7:00am, students are welcome to drop in to the orchestra room before school to practice their instruments, get additional help, and complete their Google Classroom homework assignments. I will have an iPad available for students who would like to use it. This is a great alternative for some students who have busy, after-school commitments or need extra help with the music we are working on in class. Students who take advantage of this opportunity do well in orchestra :-)
Dear Derby Orchestra Families,
Welcome back! Please read through the attached documents with your student. I will send a "test email" for my orchestra e-news distribution list at the end of the week. Please send an email to email@example.com if you DID NOT receive the test email.
Also, check out volunteer opportunities within in our program or ways that you can donate to our classroom wishlist.
Looking forward to a great year together! Thank you for your partnership and support.
Dear Derby Orchestra Families,
I've attached a map of Seaholm and where to park for tomorrow night's concert.
Park in the BACK staff parking lot that is adjacent to the tennis courts. DO NOT park in the parking lot that is near the football stadium/pool door entrance of Seaholm (this is the farthest point from our warm-up rooms/performance venue).
Turn onto Carrollwood Court from W. Lincoln to get to the back staff parking lot.
If your student is a cellist or bassist, you can drop them off in the bus loop area, where there are doors that lead directly to the auditorium. Cellists and bassists will unpack, tune, and warm up backstage.
Drop your student off at the first door entrance when you turn onto Carrollwood Court. It's located directly in front of the handicapped parking area. There will signs that lead them to the warm-up rooms after they enter this door.
6th Grade - Orchestra Room
7th Grade - Choir Room
8th Grade - Meet on stage for a quick sound check
I will have high school orchestra students helping students find their warm-up room, etc. Please feel free to ask them for help.
Afterglow Food Items
7th and 8th grade students should drop their items off to the cafeteria before checking in to their warm-up location. 6th grade students can bring their nut-free food item to the orchestra room and I will have volunteers take the items to the cafeteria.
Reserved Seating Areas
We will have reserved seating in the front for patrons that made donations to our program, qualifying at the Patron and Conductor level sponsorships. We will also have reserved seating for our student musicians. Please adhere to all signage that is posted throughout the auditorium.
See you tomorrow!
Dear Derby Orchestra Parents,

Chip In To Help us reach our goal!
This week, we're kicking off our new fall fundraiser! The details of this fundraiser were discussed at our Parent Music Department Meeting in October and we handed out this information to students during class.
As you know, it is necessary to supplement our school budget ($100) with fundraising dollars in order to sustain a quality string music education for all of our students.
There are many ways to do this, and in the recent past the music department at Derby has relied on our annual Fruit Sale through Indian River Florida and private donations to support our needs. The fruit sale was a HUGE asset to our music program and helped us raise over $20,000 per year. Indian River has decided that it will no longer allow their product to be used as a fundraiser with schools. While we have looked at many different types of fundraisers, there is simply nothing that we have found at this point, that would allow us to raise the amount of money needed to sustain and grow our programs.
FOR THIS REASON, WE ARE GOING TO START THE
DERBY MUSIC DEPARTMENT DONATION DRIVE!
You can donate by check, (made payable to "Derby Orchestra Boosters") or cash. In total, this goal of $20,000 for the choir, band, and orchestra comes to approximately $60 per student. While we realize that not every family can donate $60, we hope that you will consider donating what you can and/or asking others to do the same.
Tax-Deductible Check Option
The music department has teamed up with Birmingham Education Foundation in order for your donation to be tax deductable. The BEF has a Program Support Fund that is earmarked to a specific program so funds can be withdrawn to support the needs of that fund.
In order for your donation to be tax deductible you will need to make your check payable to the BEF and specify in the memo which music department (Derby Orchestra) this money will support.
Corporate Sponsor Option - NEW!
We are looking for local companies to purchase advertising space in our concert programs. This is win-win opportunity and a great way to support our program. See attached document for more information!
Each student will receive the attached donation information and suggested donation amounts. They also will receive an envelope to return with their completed "Donation Drive" form, checks and cash by Friday November 18th.
BENEFITS OF YOUR FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
With deep gratitude and appreciation,
Please consider donating a baked good item or signing up for a worker shift for our annual bake sale at Derby Parent/Teacher Conferences. Last year, we made around $500 for our program. Thanks for your consideration!
